Beats from Jersey

One night a few months back, I went to a warehouse in the outer stank of Newark. Near some railroad tracks, gloriously hideous, this facility housed my friend, his bass, and some drums. We messed around a bit, and this past weekend this is what he sent over. A strange fellow, quiet and pale and walks with a subtle hobble, the dude is hungry. I hope he keeps at it - look for more collabos in the coming months.

Funk Is Its Own Reward: The Moving Power of Parliament Funkadelic

A sprawling, comprehensive run-down on one of the most important musico-cultural institutions in American Pop Music history: Parliament Funkadelic. This "band" spanned 3 decades, moved millions, and is credited as the grand-daddy of Hip-Hop by anyone that knows what's really really real.

They are also my musical heroes. By combining elements of Gospel, R&B, Rock and Roll and Classic Soul with an original Black-American mythology and philosophy, George Clinton and his enormous posse created something much more than a sound or even a musical movement. At their height, they more closely resembled a religious event, empowering and uplifting, shaking souls and booties wherever they went.

For anyone that ever wondered: who Kanye West swore he'd never follow onstage; who gave Dr. Dre and Snoop Dog the bulk of the foundational material that made them blow up; how millions of Americans, black white and all the rest, got their church on through dancing and trancing to urban acid-like revelations; and where the phrase "Ain't no party like a ------- party cause the ------ party don't stop" came from: take a look.
